Despite its picturesque Western visuals and ambitions to revisit traditional themes with a modern perspective, Rust inadvertently becomes a cultural focal point not solely for its cinematic qualities but also for the tragic circumstances surrounding its production. The film’s release thus carries a weight beyond its artistic intent, compelling viewers and critics to confront both its aesthetic merits and its haunting real-world aftermath.

When I first approached Gatao, released in 2015 and directed by Joe Lee, I expected a compelling Taiwanese gangster film that could elevate itself beyond the typical crime genre fare. Having been a longtime fan of Hong Kong’s "Young and Dangerous" series—an iconic representation of triad movies—my hopes were rooted in the belief that Gatao might capture some of that gritty, larger-than-life appeal. Sadly, my expectations were largely unmet. The film comes across as a tired rehash of familiar gangster tropes, constrained by budget limitations and lacking the spark needed to truly resonate.

The Vigilante, also known as Aimee, is a Tubi Original action thriller that seeks to tackle the harrowing issue of sex trafficking through the lens of a female Marine’s desperate quest for justice. Directed by Lee Whittaker, the film presents a premise rife with emotional weight and tension, as Jessica, played by Jet Jandreau, embarks on a violent journey to rescue her younger sister from the clutches of human traffickers. Despite its provocative themes and action-laden plot, the film ultimately falters, leaving viewers feeling more baffled than moved.
