How to Import from Letterboxd, Trakt, Netflix, and Jellyfin.
A tracking site is only as good as the history behind it. If you've been logging films on Letterboxd, tracking shows on Trakt, or just letting Netflix quietly remember everything for you, you shouldn't have to rebuild years of viewing from scratch.
You don't have to. SXY can import your history from all three, and if you run your own media server, it can connect to Jellyfin and keep itself in sync. This guide walks through each one, from exporting your data to watching it appear in your account.
Before you start
A few things worth knowing up front:
- Where to go. All imports live in Settings → Import. You'll see a tab for each source: Letterboxd, Netflix, Trakt, and Jellyfin.
- One at a time. SXY processes a single import at a time. While one is running, the other tabs are locked until it finishes. This keeps your history consistent and avoids duplicate entries.
- It runs in the background. Once you start, you're free to browse SXY. A progress panel shows the current phase and an estimated time remaining, and you'll be notified when the import completes.
- Limits depend on your plan. Free accounts have a per-import item limit; Pro raises it to 10,000 items. Your current limit is shown right on the import tab.
- Unmatched titles are skipped, not lost. If SXY can't match an entry to its catalog, that item is skipped and listed in a report when the import finishes, you're told exactly what didn't make it.
- Duplicates are handled. By default SXY skips items you've already logged, so re-running an import won't pile up doubles.
With that out of the way, let's move some history.
Importing from Letterboxd
Letterboxd users have the easiest path, because a single export captures almost everything: your diary, ratings, reviews, watchlist, and custom lists.
Step 1 — Export your Letterboxd data
- Go to letterboxd.com/settings/data.
- Click Export Your Data.
- Letterboxd emails you a download link. Wait for that email to arrive.
- Download the ZIP file it gives you. Don't extract it.
Step 2 — Upload to SXY
- Open Settings → Import and select the Letterboxd tab.
- Drag the ZIP into the drop zone (or click to browse for it).
- SXY reads the export and shows a preview: how many diary entries, ratings, reviews, watchlist items, favorites, and lists it found, plus the date range covered.
- Choose what to bring over, diary, ratings, reviews, watchlist, lists, and favorites are all toggleable — and confirm whether to use your original watched dates.
- Start the import and let it run in the background.
Important: upload the ZIP exactly as Letterboxd gives it to you. SXY accepts the archive itself, not the individual CSV files inside it.
Importing from Trakt
- Trakt is the most complete import SXY supports, because Trakt's export already includes catalog IDs — which means your titles are matched quickly and accurately, with far less guesswork.
Step 1 — Export your Trakt data
- Go to trakt.tv/settings/data.
- Under Account Settings, click Export Data.
- Wait for the download to finish. You'll get a ZIP file.
Step 2 — Upload to SXY
- Open Settings → Import and select the Trakt tab.
- Drag in the ZIP file.
- Review the preview: movies, episodes, TV shows, ratings, watchlist items, lists, and favorites, along with the date range.
- Pick what to import — movies, TV, ratings, watchlist, lists, and favorites can each be toggled on or off.
- Start the import.
- Because Trakt data is already ID-matched, this is usually the smoothest and fastest import of the three.
Importing from Netflix
Netflix gives you a simple viewing history but, unlike Letterboxd and Trakt, no ratings, reviews, or lists. Only what you watched and when. SXY will match those titles to its catalog and build your history from there.
Step 1 — Download your Netflix viewing history
- Go to netflix.com/settings/viewed.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Download all.
- Upload the NetflixViewingHistory.csv file that downloads.
- (Depending on your region or account, Netflix may name the file ViewingActivity.csv — either works, as long as it's the CSV from that page.)
Step 2 — Upload to SXY
- Open Settings → Import and select the Netflix tab.
- Drag in the CSV file.
- Review the preview: movies, episodes, and TV shows detected, plus the date range.
- Choose whether to import movies and TV, and whether to use your original watch dates.
- Start the import.
A quick note on accuracy: Netflix history lists titles as plain text, so SXY has to match each one to its catalog. The vast majority resolve cleanly; anything that can't be matched is skipped and reported at the end.
Connecting Jellyfin
Here's the key difference: Jellyfin doesn't hand you an export file the way the others do. You can't download your watch history as a tidy ZIP. Instead, SXY connects directly to your Jellyfin server and pulls your history, then keeps it in sync going forward.
So there's no "get the file" step. There's a one-time connection, and after that it's automatic.
Step 1 — Connect your Jellyfin server
- Open Settings → Integrations (or the Jellyfin tab under Settings → Import).
- Choose Connect and enter:
- Server URL — the address of your Jellyfin server (for example, your own Jellyfin domain).
- API Key — generated from Jellyfin.
- To create the API key: in your Jellyfin dashboard, go to Dashboard → Advanced → API Keys, click +, name it something like "SXY", and copy the key into SXY.
Step 2 — Choose what to sync
-
SXY can pull three kinds of data from Jellyfin, each toggleable:
-
Watched — movies and episodes you've finished.
-
Favorites — anything you've marked as a favorite.
-
Continue Watching — partially watched movies and episodes.
Step 3 — Scan, then import
- Click Scan to preview how many watched items, favorites, and in-progress items are available.
- Review the counts, then click to start the import. Like the other sources, it runs in the background with live progress.
Step 4 — Turn on webhooks for real-time tracking
- After the initial import, enable Jellyfin webhooks so SXY captures each new watch as it happens — essential if you want accurate rewatch tracking. Point your Jellyfin webhook at the SXY webhook URL shown in your integration settings.
Once connected, Jellyfin effectively becomes hands-off: you watch something on your server, and it shows up on SXY.
After your import
Whichever source you used, the finish line looks the same:
- Your history, watchlist, and favorites populate automatically.
- Your profile stats and viewing calendar update to reflect the imported dates.
- You get a completion notification, plus a report of anything that was skipped so you can review it.
- If you imported from more than one source, run them one after another. SXY will merge them and skip duplicates along the way.
Troubleshooting
- "Please upload a ZIP file." You're uploading extracted files instead of the archive. Use the ZIP exactly as Letterboxd or Trakt downloaded it.
- "Please upload a CSV file." For Netflix, make sure you're uploading the CSV from your viewing history page, not a saved web page or screenshot.
- Some titles are missing. Unmatched titles are listed in the post-import report. This is most common with Netflix data, where titles arrive as plain text, and with obscure or differently-titled releases.
- Can't start a new import. Another import is still running. Finish or cancel it, then try again.
- Jellyfin won't connect. Confirm your server URL is reachable from the internet and that the API key has the right permissions.
- Only part of my history came through. Check your plan's import limit. If your history exceeds it, upgrade to Pro (10,000 items) or split the import.
